INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION
Basic meditation instruction is offered in a relaxed format. There is plenty of opportunity to ask questions about all aspects of the practice with Desert Lotus Zen. Please contact us here or call 602-904-5270. Our next offering is January 8 at 9:30 a.m.
BUDDHA MATTERS SALON
We meet each month for an evening of conversation and fellowship to deepen our practice and our connections to the community. We may watch a film, discuss a reading, or share poetry. We invite you to join us for a light supper and stimulating conversation. For more information and this month's program click here.
WORK IN THE ROOM
Work in the room is an encounter between a teacher and student. The idea is that it’s possible for two people to step outside of the usual prison of the mind and meet directly. When you do this you are meeting not just the teacher but your own nature. Everything appears in a larger, more breathable air and brighter, more vivid relief. So that’s the idea that work in the room serves — it offers a sample of freedom. The only method of work in the room is to bring up a koan, something to do with your practice, something you have discovered, something you have difficulty with in life or in meditation. Then you’ll find out what happens when you bring your attention to bear upon that subject.
It doesn’t seem kind to pretend that such a meeting can be effective if we don’t bring full attention to it. We have a couple of requirements that seem to help. We ask that you be a member, that you have a commitment to the community that maintains the vessel in which transformation happens. The other requirement is also practical: We ask that you meditate every day.— John Tarrant
WORK IN THE ROOM is available weekly with Deborah Saint Sensei and in conjunction with Koan Seminars.with John Tarrant Roshi.
KOAN SEMINARS
These exciting one-day programs offer a rare opportunity to experience koans in a collaborative environment, working with John Tarrant Roshi, one of the foremost koan teachers in the United States. These programs include guided meditation, interactive koan work, and conversation.
No experience is needed to participate in a koan seminar; koans meet where you are. Koans are both works of art and methods of spiritual transformation. With a koan you let it keep you company. It's not a matter of looking for the right answer, but of finding out what the koan has to teach you. The koan doesn't judge you or complain, it just reveals what the mind does. It also shows the nature of the world when it is not being too distorted by delusion. Koans are intended to take you directly into reality--before you can explain it away. . | 2011 ScheduleFebruary 18-20 Friday Talk 7:30 p.m. Saturday Seminar 9:30 am--4 pm Click here to register.
